Public Transport Fares to Increase by 20% Effective August 8 – GRTCC Confirms
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced a 20% increase in public transport fares, effective Friday, August 8, 2025.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News on Monday, August 4, the General Secretary of the GRTCC, Mr. Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, confirmed the adjustment and indicated that an official statement will soon be released to the public.
According to Mr. Ohene-Yeboah, the fare hike has become necessary due to rising operational costs faced by transport operators. He pointed specifically to the recent introduction of a GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy, implemented on Wednesday, July 16, as a major factor influencing the cost of fuel, spare parts, and vehicle maintenance.
> “This decision should not come as a surprise to the public. In May, we responded to the government’s appeal to reduce fares, with the hope that the cost of doing business would drop. Sadly, the situation has worsened instead,” he stated.
The GRTCC General Secretary emphasized that transport unions are also under financial pressure and appealed to the public for understanding and cooperation.
> “Maintenance and operating costs have become overwhelming. Without this adjustment, the transport business would face serious challenges,” he added.
The 20% increase will apply across all categories of public transportation, including:
Shared taxis
Intra-city “trotro” services
Intercity buses
Long-distance and haulage transport
Mr. Ohene-Yeboah noted that the decision was reached after thorough consultation with all major transport unions.
The GRTCC is calling on commuters, drivers, and the general public to support the implementation of the new fare structure to ensure the continued viability of public transport services nationwide.
